Recitals, Take 4

Helen Marlais and the composers at FJH have compiled a great Early Intermediate Collection in their book: In Recital Throughout the Year Vol. 2 Book 4.


Inside this book you will find some great pieces for any recitals throughout the year, it includes showpiece solos, lyrical solos, Halloween Solo, Christmas Solo, Patriotic Solo, and one equal-part duet.

As noted on page four of this book, the concepts reinforced in this book are:

  • Dotted quarter, eighth note rhythmic patterns
  • 16th note patterns
  • Common time signatures and simple compound meters
  • Intricate finger crossovers
  • Changes of tempo, articulation, and mood within the piece.
  • Major, minor, and diminished root position chords and their inversions.  Also, dominant and sub-dominant chords.
  • Hand-over-hand arpeggios
  • Holding down notes in one hand while simultaneously playing moving notes with the same hand.
  • Octave scale passages and blocked octaves.
  • Left hand parts increase in difficulty compared to the previous books, in some cases, the left hand plays the melody
  • Modulation from one key to another
  • Hand positions expand larger than a fifth
  • Terms such as: ritardando, diminuendo, subito piano, subito forte, fortissimo, pianissimo, poco piu mosso, allargando, and rallentando.
  • Keys of D major, B flat major, A flat major, A minor, D minor, and E minor.
