Once Upon A Rainbow 1

Once Upon A Rainbow is a lovely 3 book series "dedicated to color and fantasy at the piano" as explained in the Note to the Teacher.

Book one is an Early Elementary Collection encouraging students to explore and create with many different tone colors.  There's a rainbow in the back of the book where students can color in a band of color once they complete each of the 7 pieces to complete the rainbow.

These pieces utilize early reading skills, so rests are kept to a minimum to direct the students' attention to melodic shape and rhythmic motion.  Three of the pieces have optional teacher duet.

In addition to what you'd expect in an early elementary book (quarter, half, whole notes, Middle C position, C position,  f, mf, mp, p, ties,) you will also find slurs, pedal, traveling up the piano in thirds, crescendo and diminuendo markings, staccato, fermata, left hand cross over, sharps, 8va, pp, hand over hand playing, hand movement, an ending chord where several notes are played at once, accent, and eighth notes (in the last song of the book).

Many of the unfamilar markings will have directions in parenthesis, such as (Lift pedal.) or (very soft) for pp.

The Song "Storm and Rainbow" is written to be taught by rote.  It includes many colorful tones using seconds, downward figures, upward figures, and 4 note chords.   Many of the other songs have clever and engaging words.  The "Double Rainbow" song uses pedal and hand movement at the beginning and end.  "Rainbow, Rainbow" uses pedal and dramatic dynamic differences to make this one page song engaging.

The songs are:
A Rainbow Is A Smile (Turned Upside Down) - played here with duet.
Most of All I Like Rainbows - this video is explaining another book, however, it is the same song.  Though in this book there is no teacher duet.
A Double Rainbow
I'm A Walking Rainbow
Rainbow, Rainbow
The Storm and the Rainbow
At the End of the Rainbow

Included in the book are also an optional composing projects and a musical dictionary.

There's a great variety of songs to teach a variety of colorful qualities.  Some are smooth, played with pedal, others create a tone-picture of a storm, others are zippy and cute, while others are slow and pretty.  Several of these will end up stuck in your head!

You can find this book on Sheet Music Plus for $5.50
